Alicia & Alex :: The Harbor View Hotel Edgartown, MA

Fourth of July festivities brought Alicia back to Boston from San Diego for a weekend with college friends! To Alicia’s surprise a weekend in Martha’s Vineyard was where she would meet Alex who were mutual friends with her college pals! About 4 years later, a spontaneous trip to Cancun, Mexico had Alex down on one knee with a background of a full moon on the beach. Fast forward to May 26, 2012 , where the couple said their ” I do’s” at the Harbor View Hotel in Martha’s vineyard where they had originally met and fell in love with!

Q. The Invitations

Alicia. Our invitations were custom designed and hand painted for us by the amazing team at Momental Designs. I found them while hunting around on Style Me Pretty. I saw Kristy Rice’s work and knew she was the one that would be able to make my vision come true. To tie in our color palate, venue and the romantic big blooms- she hand painted our venue on a tag that we used for the outer closure. Inside our guests found the beautiful hand painted bloom on the invitation. They were amazing to work with and went above and beyond our expectations.

Q. What made your event UNIQUE

Alicia. Our wedding was the perfect excuse for our guests to take a long weekend to Marthas Vineyard and enjoy what we call our little piece of heaven. A lot of our guests had either not been there before or had only spent limited time there- so it was a great way for them to relax, enjoy Memorial Day weekend and kick off the summer. We wanted our wedding to be comfortable but an experience. Greeted in their rooms with Custom Made “Marthas Vineyard” reusable welcome bags filled with things to make their stay comfortable- we gave them suggestions of things in the area that we love and wanted to share. The little details were the fun part of planning the wedding. Made by the bride- each persons seating card was a handmade paper flower inside a clear Christmas ornament that can be hung on their trees for years to come as a reminder of their trip out to MV for our wedding . We had pictures of us when we were younger on the ladies and mens room- just to give our guests a laugh. “Dancing Shoes” for our lady guests with uncomfortable shoes so they could enjoy the band. All of our programs, menu cards, signs, desserts etc were handmade by the bride and bridesmaids.

Q. What was your favorite moment or aspect of the day?

Alicia. We both agree that our favorite moment of the day was our ceremony. We chose to write our own vows, making it a heartfelt personal experience for us to share infront of our friends and family. When we were standing arm in arm facing our guests as our readings were done, we were able to for the first time stand there together and see all of our guests at once. It was an incredible feeling standing there knowing all of those people were there, in our favorite place that means so much to us, for us!! Watching as we made our commiments to each other- the love that surrounded us from our friends and family was unbelievable.

Q. Finish this sentence: “One thing I learned from my wedding planning…”

Alicia. I loved every second of it- and the more details the better. I never expected I would become so consumed with the details and the planning but with all the online resources out there now- I loved being able to make our day our own. Friends and family joke that I am going to have withdrawls, but it was the best experience getting to plan the biggest party of our lives, for those we care the most about, in our favorite place in the world.

Q. What was your inspiration behind your wedding? Can be anything from a color palette to a location, from a memory to a dress/bouquet/shoes…anything! What motivated you and most influenced your decisions?

Alicia. I knew I wanted a wedding dress that was unique, a little different and a statement piece. I also knew I wanted just Peonies for flowers. Once I found my dress, it was simple and classic on top with the large flowers on the bottom adding that dramatic piece that i was looking for, the rest of the day was built from there. We wanted to keep things classic and elegant with a touch of modern. The large romantic bloom was a theme carried through out the wedding. Style Me Pretty was a major source for my vision and details.

Q. Colors / Themes of the day

Alicia. Growing up on Cape Cod, I always knew I wanted to get married by the beach but I didn’t want the standard seashell and beach glass themed wedding. Before we even got engaged, I knew that I wanted to get married at the Harbor View. Its such a beautiful resort that exudes classic elegance. We took that feel and used that for our wedding. Our color palate was blush, white, tan, silver and Navy. The girls wore Navy and the guys wore Tan suits with Vineyard Vines Navy Ties which are classic Marthas Vineyard Colors. The décor and flowers were blends of fluffy blush pink peonies with white and silver accents around them. We wanted our day to be timeless with a blend of modern elegance. My dress had large ruffled flowers on the bottom tying in the theme of full bloomed romantic flowers.

Q. The Wedding Cake

Alicia. With the Bride being Gluten Free we opted to not have a cake, but to have a dessert bar filled with all homemade desserts that meant something to us. Each dessert was either a family tradition, a favorite of the bride and groom or a wedding party favorite. Our guests enjoyed Homemade Gluten Free cupcakes along with, chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered marshmallows, Brickle, Peanut Butter Balls and Pink Old Fashion Popcorn- all which were made by the bride with help of the wedding party. We also had Carmel ( grooms favorite) and Pink Champagne ( brides favorite) French Macaroons from Maison du Macaron in NYC. As well as Chilmark Chocolates, a local treat that is a favorite of the grooms parents. The father of the groom constructed individual cubbies for each of the cupcakes that were topped with handmade fondant flowers to be displayed in. Our Dessert bar was a team effort but every bit of it was made with love.
