Molly & Nicholas :: Private Estate Newport, RI “A Fashionable Affair”

Overlooking historic Newport Cliffwalk, Nick’s families homes, were the ultimate sites for Molly & Nick to marry July 7th, 2012..especially since they had both grown up, met one another, got engaged.. the next step was of course to marry there too! A fun twist to this wedding, being that it’s Bridal Market week in NYC, Molly used to model for one of the leading Bridal & Fashion designers  ”Leila Rose”.. so who’d she wear down the aisle?? “Swan Lake” by Leila Rose.. followed by a 2nd skirt for dancing “The City” also by Leila Rose! ..and being in Fashion Molly couldn’t be the only STYLISH one – Nick wore a Hickey Freeman Seersucker Vest & Blazer paired with Lock Sicker raw denim pants! {A groom in jeans – now that is PERFECT!!}

Q. What where the colors & or themes of the day?

Molly. There were a few themes running through our wedding. One is the attire of Nick’s friends. Molly and her father own own Men’s Premium Denim Company (www.locksicker.com). It is a high quality raw denim that we encouraged our male friends and to wear to the wedding! As we wanted the wedding to have a casual chic feel, we thought that incorporating our rich, dark blue denim into the wedding would make it unique. Another thing you will see a lot of is Mercury Glass. I love mercury glass so, along with my mother we scoured every tj-maxx and marshalls from Rhode Island to Connecticut to collect over 25 mercury glass vessels that were used to show case all the flower arrangements at the reception. The flowers were various colors of pink from fucshia to light pinks. The flowers are all peonies, David Austin roses, and hydrangeas. Fuschia pink pom poms also hung from the ceiling of the tent.

Q. What was your inspiration behind your wedding? Can be anything from a color palette to a location, from a memory to a dress/bouquet/shoes…anything! What motivated you and most influenced your decisions?

Molly. My shoes were a very important part of my out fit. I wanted a fuschia inspired wedding and I got it, shoes and all!
I was motivated by a love of old newport and  wanted our wedding to have a vintage, casual chic feel. We wanted people to feel that they were helping us to celebrate this union and to know how important they were to us. Without the support of our friends and family, Nick and I wouldn’t be the people we are today. We wanted them to feel celebrated as well!

Q. What made your event UNIQUE

Molly. While I truly believe that each bride and groom bring their own special touches to a wedding, ours will stand out thanks to our familial ties to Newport, RI and our access to one of the town’s most picturesque and historical properties. Both Nick and I feel a strong connection to Newport, where we spent our childhood summers roaming the sands of the same local beach club that our parents and grandparents have patronized for decades. As such, we are thrilled to have our wedding ceremony and reception on Nick’s family property, overlooking the water and Newport’s historic Cliff Walk.
Any talk of Newport, and our wedding in particular, is inextricably linked in our hearts and minds to Nick’s grandmother, Marion Oates Charles (known affectionately as ‘Oatsie’). A fixture of Washington’s social and political scenes for years, Oatsie is known for her eclectic style and eccentric personality. She is perhaps best described in Ronald Reagan’s biography as, “a friend of the great, the not so great, and the never will be great, but what the heck!”
Oatsie bought Land’s End in Newport in the 195′s. Located at the water’s edge of Ledge Road, the house, once owned by famed author Edith Wharton, served as her summer home for years. Today, Nick’s parents live at Land’s End, while Oatsie has found comfort at The Whim, the house she had built directly next door. The Whim is known for its amazing garden, which has been feature in numerous publications.
In July, we will get married in the garden, surrounded by an intimate selection of friends and family. Following the ceremony at The Whim, the celebration will move next door to Land’s End, where a tent will house an oceanfront dinner reception followed by dancing. Nick and I only hope to bring a modern sensibility to the golden age sense of elegance and grace that is our families’ legacy.

Q. Finish this sentence: “One thing I learned from my wedding planning…”

Molly. One thing I learned from my wedding planning is to let go of control and hire a wedding planner! She, Stephanie Frazer Grimm, will save your life and sanity!

Q. What was your favorite moment or aspect of the day?

Molly. Aside from the actually ceremony, it was when Stephanie, our wedding planner, took us into the tent and we saw our vision come to life. I really let go and gave Stephanie the freedom to take my colors and ideas and run with them. I felt so grateful for all the work she put in. It was spectacular and it was all for us! I was princess for an evening and it was wonderful.

I should note here too that Nick, our fabulously stylish groom, is in fact also a photographer himself.. so OF COURSE no photographer can sit still without a camera in hand lol
